First of all, I just want to make it clear that the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior is my hero. He was the greatest persuasive speech writer (and I say this without exaggeration or irony) in history. I have wowed many classes by being able to find ANY RHETORICAL STRATEGY they can think of in "Letter from Birmingham Jail." And that's just one piece. So maybe you can understand some of the bitterness that undercut the following words I spoke to my classes today.
"Good morning, guys. Hope you had a good break. Remember last week when we were studying irony and you were kind of struggling with how it didn't have to be funny? Well, I have a great example for you. Just yesterday at the parade two young men stood behind my husband and me and went on and on about how disrespectful it was that some white people came to a 'black' parade. How those people needed to go back to 'their' part of town. Then, a girl about 15 years old next to us dropped a set of brass knuckles she had in her pocket. I'm sure Dr. King was very proud. That's irony."
